Concord Middle School is a visionary undertaking that seeks to revolutionize the learning experience by creating an innovative and sustainable environment for the next generation. Spanning nearly 143,000 gross square feet, this project involves the consolidation of two existing facilities into a single middle school, serving grades six through eight. Anchored by the principles of supporting next-generation learning, achieving net-zero energy, and cultivating a profound connection to nature, well-being, and joy, the design embraces a unique concept known as Treetop Teams. Situated on a heavily constrained site, the school is strategically positioned on the edge of a plateau, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding forest and wetlands. The Treetop Teams concept organizes clusters of learning environments around a commons, with these spaces intentionally designed to be elevated above the tree canopy, providing students with panoramic vistas and a connection to nature.
The project embraces a modern approach to education, reimagining learning spaces to create an environment that aligns with current pedagogy. Building on the client’s mission for Team Based Learning, the project includes dedicated Team Commons where students can come together to work on projects and engage in interdisciplinary learning. These spaces are celebrated as “eddy” spaces off a shared corridor providing Team identity.
the Concord Middle School project exemplifies an unwavering dedication to sustainability through a comprehensive integration of water, energy, and resilient strategies. Working with the Town of Concord, the team has crafted energy performance strategies, aiming to achieve a Net Zero Energy facility that adheres to Passive House standards. With a targeted maximum Predicted Energy Use Intensity of 25 kBtu/SF/year, the project places importance on ultra-low energy consumption while harnessing the potential of on-site renewable energy.
At the heart of the design lies a profound emphasis on forging a strong bond with nature, fostering well-being, and cultivating a sense of joy. Outdoor classrooms are thoughtfully integrated. A captivating bridging lobby seamlessly harmonizes with the surrounding landscape, beckoning students to engage with the natural world. The school’s proximity to nearby wetlands enriches learning opportunities. This connection elevates learning, nurturing a sense of well-being and excitement.
